Mt. Makalu towers high at the height of 8, 463 m and 27, 766 ft high, one of the most technical tough mountain to climb, which was first climbed in May 15th 1955 by French Expeditions, since then challenge to the top and as well trekking continues but much less than other mainstream trekking routes.
Mt. Makalu offers tremendous views with walks into beautiful and scenic Barun valley overlooking rare East Face of Mt. Everest known as Khan sung Face of Everest with Lhotse-Chamlang and Baruntse peaks within its pristine and tranquility at Makalu Base Camp of above 4,812 m high.
Starting this great adventure with scenic flight both ways to and from Kathmandu-Tumlingtar-Kathmandu, Tumlingtar a small town of warm and semi tropic climate within Arun Valley, where a short drive takes you on the hills with grand views of Makalu-Baruntse and Chamlang peaks.
As the adventurous walk progress leaving farm villages and human settlement for a week in total isolation of mountains-alpine enchanting forest and scenic Barun valley heading high at Kaungma-la with super views of Makalu and as far to Kanchenjunga towards east horizon.
Walk leads on high ridge over smaller passes of above 4,000 m to reach at scenic Barun valley enclosed by high cliffs and snow capped peaks, as the walk leads towards North West at Makalu base camp encircled by array of peaks and glaciers.
After a wonderful experience at Makalu base camp heading back on the same route to Num village with exciting drive to Tumlingtar, where a sweeping scenic flight brings you back in the hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu with memorable and exciting time and adventure on Makalu Base Camp Trekking.
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu via respective airlines
Day 02: Fly to Tumlingtar 448 m - 45 mins flight with overnight stop.
Day 03: Drive to Num 1,490 m - 04 hrs with afternoon free to relax and enjoy the views.
Day 04: Trek to Seduwa 1,540 m- 05 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to Tashi Gaon 2,135m - 04 hours.
Day 06: Trek to Kaungma Danda 3,556 m - 05 hours
Day 07: Trek to Mumbuk 3,553 m - 06 hours
Day 08: Trek to Nghe (Nehe Kharka) 3,760 m - 05 hours.
Day 09: Trek to Shersong 4, 572 m - 05 hours.
Day 10: Rest day at Shersong for day hike to Makalu South Base Camp 4,812 m.
Day 11: Trek to Yangle Kharka 3, 598 m - 06 hours.
Day 12: Trek to Mumbuk - 05 hours.
Day 13: Trek to Kaungma Ridge - 05 hours.
Day 14: Trek to Narbu Gaon 1,310 m via Tashi Gaon - 05 hours.
Day 15: Trek to Num via Seduwa - 05 hours.
Day 16: Drive back to Tumlingtar - 04 hrs.
Day 17: Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels.
Day 18: Transfer to international airport for flight homeward bound.

Evening includes typical Nepalese dinner in a nice local restaurant with cultural-folk programs to entertain you with delicious meals.
Makalu Base Camp Trekking starts with sweeping flight of 40 mins to low warm areas of Arun valley at Tumlingtar town, during air panorama of snow capped peaks with Everest and Makalu, at Tumlingtar overnight in a nice local lodge, a rural farm areas of warm semi-tropical climate located above Arun River, afternoon free to explore this interesting small town.
From Tumlingtar morning starts with interesting drive uphill past many farm lands and rural villages with large town at Khandbari, drive continues on dirt road heading higher to Chinchela village and then downhill to Num village, which is slowly turning into a town due to motorable road.
In Num overnight into a lodge or in tents with nice views of surrounding landscapes and peaks of Jalajala Himal and Makalu.
Today our first day walk starts with downhill and up to Seduwa village, a steep descend to the bridge over raging Arun River around this place quite tropical, and then with a climb towards farm fields and small villages of Runmura, here with lunch break and then with a gradual climb to reach overnight stop at Seduwa village, a small place with primary school and a health post with basic facilities with views of Num across the ridge and of other adjoining hills of Bhojpur and Jalajala rocky peaks.
After Seduwa village, morning walk on undulating winding trail to Tashigaon a Sherpa village, the last village before Makalu base camp, walk leads through farm areas with nice terraces of millet, a major crops after rice and wheat’s of this area, and then for 3-4 hours of good trek reaching at Tashigaon for lunch and overnight camp with time to visit the local village around, which is quite interesting. The Sherpa of this area is quite different to Khumbu highlanders.
Leaving Tashi Gaon the last village for a week long, morning walk leads on gentle path into thick forest of rhododendron, oaks and tall pines trees passing many cattle herder’s temporary shelters of shades and stone huts after few hours of pleasant walk stopping for lunch on the grassy meadow and summer pasture ground.
Afternoon walk with steep climb for few hours to reach at Kaungma ridge top, as the tall trees gives away for smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes and small birch trees.
This high ridge offers excellent views of Kanchenjunga mountain range and of Mt. Makalu with adjoining peaks, from here in complete wilderness.
Morning walk from Kaungma Danda leads a high ridge line with few ups and down reaching at icy ponds of Thulo Pokhari (big) with Sano Pokhari(small) after crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at above 4, 453 meters passes, and then downhill back into forest with views of Khumbakarna Himal range of mountains towards north, overnight camp on a level ground in the middle of tall trees.
Adventure today leads to beautiful Barun valley a unique place where rare Himalayan rare species of vegetation- plants and herbs including wild-life are found here only in whole Himalaya, starting our morning with down-hill of an hour then crossing a small stream to reach into Barun valley.
As the route leads with gentle up looking over peaks on both side of the valley and then passing few Sheppard’s shelters with a small Buddhist Gompa (monastery), after a pleasant walk of 5 hours reaching at Nehe Kharka for overnight camp around Barun valley.
From Barun valley walk to Shersong leading at the end valley near Makalu base camp leading on gentle uphill crossing streams with great views of Mt. Makalu and Baruntse peaks, after a nice walk of 5 hours reaching at our destination at Sherson for two nights camps.
Rest and acclimatization day to soak with the views of Mt. Makalu, Baruntse peaks with peak IV, morning an optional hike for excellent views of Mt. Everest with rare East Face known as Kanshung face with Lhotse.
Retrace the journey back on the Barun valley to Yangle Kharkaenclosed within high rocky cliffs with views of cascading waterfalls after a descend reaching the overnight camp at cow herders temporary summer grazing place at Yangle-Kharka.
After a wonderful time at Barun valley, walk leads past the valley with a climb to reach back into thick woodland at Mumbuk for overnight camp.
On the same trail back to Khoma ridge morning walk with a climb for an hour or more through forest on reaching the hill top ridge leaving the tree lines, and passing the ponds and over Tutu la and Shipton la reaching at Kaungma hill top for overnight camp.
Morning walk on downhill path back into forest of tall tree lines to reach villages and farm fields, on reaching at Tashi Gaon taking a different higher route to Nawa or Narbu gaon village, through cool shade of woodlands and farm terraces and then reaching a large Sherpa village of Narbu Gaon on for overnight stop, with afternoon free to explore this nice farm village.
From Narbu Gaon our last day walk of this wonderful adventure leading downhill with few short up to Seduwa village, after a rest here continue descend on a steep path to Arun River, after crossing a bridge a steep climb for few hours to reach at Num village for last overnight around the high hills of Makalu.
After a wonderful time on the high hills and mountains with farm villages, from Num taking an exciting drive on the rough road passing past villages with beautiful views of surrounding green hills and peaks, after few hours of drive reaching at Khadbari, a major town and headquarter of Sanka Sabaha district of Makalu region. From here an hour downhill back to Tumlingtar in the comfort of a nice lodge.
Early morning transfer to air terminal for super short flight to Kathmandu with scenic and exciting moments during air borne, after an interesting air journey reaching at hustle and bustle of Kathmandu city life.
Last day in amazing Nepal, in the country where one never forgets its incredible experience in the comfort of Mountain Magic Treks expert staff and guide, and then transfer for your international flight homeward bound or to respective destination with wonderful experience on Makalu Base Camp Trekking.
This is a high altitude journey where elevation starts from low 800 m to 5,416 m high, where symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) might occur due to dry air and less oxygen, as our adventure starts with overland drive with overnight stops in nice and cozy local lodge, which provides you with acclimatization as well with rest day at Manang before heading much higher altitude.

Weather & Climate on Annapurna Semi Circuit Trekking:
The weather depending upon the season of trekking around Annapurna or other higher Himalayan belts, where's Annapurna Circuit trekking can be visited all time of the year, however monsoon months of July to mid September will be wet but much greener with heavy moistures.
The best time will be from March to May when wild flowers are in full bloom around 2,000 m to 3,000 m high and then tree lines and vegetation declines for rough arctic terrain, the temperature will be 15 to 20 degree Celsius during the day with sunlight, morning and evening can be much cooler with minimum of -0 to 05 degree Celsius not counting the wind chill factors.
As the trek leads higher above 4,000 m temperature drops in the shade as well in the morning and night time, day will be clear with strong sunlight and UV (due to drop in oxygen and air pressure on high elevation) , where you need strong sun screen to avoid sun burn in direct sunlight.
Mid September to December will be the clearest weather but with short days minimum of -05 to -10 degree Celsius in the morning and night time with maximum of 15-20 degree during the day in full sunlight, also depends upon the altitude and areas of trekking.
December to March will be the coldest months with chances of snows with minimum of -10 to -15 degree Celsius with maximum 15-18 degree Celsius without wind chill factor, however most of the day time will be clear with fine blue sky.
Important Notes for the Trekking around Annapurna and other Himalaya region:
Main flow of foreign visitors in Nepal is for trekking from moderate to adventurous or challenging treks, the most important is choosing the right trip as per your duration of holiday and fitness, for Annapurna and other Himalayan trekking adventure one needs to be in sound health and physically fit.
On booking with us preparation of fitness required like walking-jogging-Jumba-aerobic at least a month before your departure from home country, and all clients should be prepared with Travel and Medical Insurance (in case for sudden accidents and immediate evacuation by any means of transport available for quick relief to nearest hospitals.
Please send us your dietary list and medical history report so that we can arrange well in advance respectively.
Book the ticket from home for Kathmandu-Nepal to reach at least a day ahead or earlier from trek departure with much space in Kathmandu after the trek, this allows you with more time in Nepal to enjoy the culture and heritage life of Nepalese and also in case of flight delay (Kathmandu-Pokhara-Kathmandu) which can happen sometimes due to freak bad and unfavorable weather.
If it’s too much to carry from your home country some of the necessary equipment can be hired or bought in Kathmandu around Thamel as well.
Most of the equipment is general and standard lists for all seasons while on trek, but may differ as per the season and duration of trekking and areas of your chosen trip.
