Helambu Trekking in Nepal

Helambu Trek is one of the most popular treks for trekkers in Langtang region. Mountain Magic Treks offers the best cost (price) and itinerary for 5 to 7 days of this circuit. You can start this trek from Melamchi Bazar which is about 60 km or Sundarijal which is 26 km from Kathmandu from either side.  Located in the northeast of Kathmandu, it extends from the north of Tararang to the tree line of Gosaikund Lake and the lower slopes of Jugal Himal. There we come across several highland Tamang and Sherpa villages scattered on both sides of the Melamchi river.

Helambu Short Trekking varies according to the wishes of the clients and we can design the itinerary as per our client's request. The Langtang Valley is known as the "Valley of Ice". The view of the mountains here is beautiful. On both sides of the valley the mountains rise, towering into the sky.

The valley offers pine forests, slow flowing rivers and rapid mountain streams. , rugged rock and snow-capped peaks, grassy bottoms, and meadows scattered with daisies and wild primulas. In the upper part of the valley, there are snow bridges spanning angry precipices, high passes shrouded in mist, small lakes with icebergs coating them. and water of crystalline luster. The trek is relatively easy because the altitudes are low, between 800m and 3600m, offering less climbing and warmer temperatures.

Important Tips for Helambu Short Trek

Before planning a Helambu 5 day trek, here are some important tips to make your trek easy and enjoyable.

  • Safe drinking water is important when we are on the trek and we recommend drinking 3-4 liters of water a day in any case (this helps with de-hydration and altitude sickness AMS).
  • Don't forget to bring a water purifier tablet.
  • Do not drink water directly or from other direct water sources.
  • Carry enough money while trekking. ATM may not be accessible in trekking area.

All the packages are conducted strictly under the rules and guidelines of Nepal Government Acts and Regulations.

Why do you like Helambu Trek?

The Helambu trek starts from Sundarijal, where there is a small dam and a hydroelectric station. It takes an hour's journey from Kathmandu. The trek passes through dense mountainous timberland and some amazing rice fields and various amazing Buddhist monasteries. Helambu trek will be one of the amazing treks for any trekker. The scenery of Langtang area touched my heart.

The most important advantage of this trek is that this area is less crowded and noise free as compared to some parts of Annapurna trek and Everest trek. Apart from this, the trek offers a wide range of culture and scenic views. Helambu short trek is the best short trek near Kathmandu valley. Despite being so close to Kathmandu, the Helambu region is relatively undeveloped.

Apart from the Hyolmo culture of the high mountain people, green rhododendron and bamboo forests, majestic waterfalls, and the snow-capped Himalayas make the trek one of the most diverse treks near Kathmandu. The great Himalayan scenery and monasteries bordering Tibet make a trip to this region an exciting experience.
So, do you prefer Helambu trekking for 5 days with Mountain Magic Treks? If your answer is yes, book this short trip with us.

If it's not enough, no worries. We offer 9 days more Helambu trekking itinerary, which is an extended route of the predecessor. To know more about Langtang trek please contact us.

Trip Information

Meals

Eating is a big part of the Holiday. Traveling with Mountain Magic Treks, you experience the vast array of wonderful food Nepalese, Italian, Continental, Chinese, and several local cuisines. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included in the package. Your guide will suggest delicious, hygienic and each place special food during your trip. Mountain restaurant owner prefers not to order many dishes and waste food as they would like to cater more trekkers with limited food before runoff stuck. It’s a week or more day’s hard works for Porters and caravans to bring food to these places. During this trek you will usually have breakfast and dinner at the same Lodge, Lunch will be eaten at one of the trail side restaurants on route.

Accommodation

A Tea House is a combination of a guest house, restaurant, and social hang out. A private room is available in most tea houses, except for high altitudes ones where it will be just dormitories. The Lodges are fairly basic. The room is spare with twin beds and very little additional furniture. Blankets are generally provided. There is a large dining hall warmed by the Bukhara stove (an iron cylinder, fitted with a chimney duct, in which a log fire is lighted. There is normally no electric lighting in the room unless the village has hydroelectric power. The dining room usually has solar lighting.

Most tea houses now also have electricity for charging small appliances- mobile phones and cameras- and there will be a small charge for this.

Drinking water

Mountain Magic Treks provides unlimited chlorine/iodine treated water for the trek. All tea houses have mineral water and boiled water for trekkers upon additional cost. We discourage the purchase of mineral water and bottled water while on the trek as plastic bottles and difficult to dispose of and have become an environmental problem.

Route Map

Mountain Magic Treks offers you complimentary trekking route map T-short and duffel bags

Important to note

Please read the Gear list section of this trip notes for additional details of what you need to bring for the trek on this trip. You will need to bring a comfortable medium sized day pack to carry the things that you will need during the day. This should have a waist strap or (batter) a padded waist belt. The weather is subject to change in the mountains so layered clothing is recommended all around the year.

Difficulty

Whilst some individuals seek to summit the greatest mountain on earth, it is enough for most mere mortals to simply stand at the base and experience the awesome stature of Langtang from below. However, there are no comfortable roads but it works if you want to drive. Into the Langtang Himal Trekking every person seeking to view the incredible mountain up close will need to trek through the Langtang Valley from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa and back again - unless, of course, you can afford a helicopter!. The journey usually takes several weeks and can sometimes seem a little daunting to a novice hiker. But don't panic, it's very achievable!

The first thing to make clear is that the Langtang Himal  Trekking requires no technical climbing and is essentially a long hike. We therefore strongly believe that anyone with determination and a basic fitness level can trek the route - and all of our successful clients attest to this!. We have seen overweight, underweight, old and young do this trek and all of them enjoyed it thoroughly.

That being said, there are a number of crucial factors to consider prior to trekking the route such as length, altitude, and training that will help you determine whether you think the Langtang Himal Trekking route is the right trek for you.

Travel Insurance:

For everyone who will plan to Trek in Nepal, it is highly recommended that you get travel insurance that covers added expenses that might result due to various health issues, injuries or accidents (together with air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and another treatment cost). Your insurance policy should cover up the entire activities that you are planning to accomplish throughout your stay in Nepal. In addition to this, the policy should also cover death, misplaced luggage, theft and liability, cancellations, medical treatment (counting hospital charges, cost of the medicine, doctor’s fees) as well as repatriation cost. Also, this trekking trail in Nepal takes you of 5,000 m above the altitude, therefore, you also need to ensure that your insurance policy covers treks that go over 5,000 m. In short, its client himself/herself has to take responsibility regarding unforeseen expenses during this trip.

Nepal Visa:

If you are wondering about how to obtain a Nepal visa, then the easiest way to obtain it is at the Tribhuwan International Airport upon your arrival in Nepal or else at the immigration entry point if you are entering through the border of India or Tibet.

Note: There are few countries namely Nigeria, Ghana, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Cameroon, Swaziland, Iraq, Ethiopia, Liberia, Palestine, etc. People from these countries do not get the visa from the immigration entry points of Nepal.)

What do you need to obtain a Nepal visa?

For more information get from Nepal Immigration

Nepal Entry Application Download PDF

If you are thinking of taking a visa at the airport or immigration entry point, following are your requirements: A valid passport (The passport should have a validity of at least six months) You should fill the application form for visa available at airport or immigration entry points. Two passport size photos

Visa Extension:

If you want to extend the visa for 15 days or less, visa extension charge is USD 30 or equivalent convertible currency

If you want to extend the visa for more than 15 days, USD 2 will be charged per day after 15 days. However, the visa can be extended maximum up to 150 days in a visa year (Visa year refers to year starting January to December).

Transit Visa:

When a foreigner has to get down at Nepalese airport as a result of his/her transit point or due to any force landing for whatever reason, the foreigner can obtain a transit visa for a day after paying USD 5 or any other currency equivalent.

Best time for Langtang Himal Trekking:

Spring (March, April & May) and autumn (September, October, and November) are the best time of the year for trekking in Nepal. During this time, the weather is pleasant with efficient sunlight and warmth. The sky is clear which means that you can truly enjoy the remarkable Nepalese landscape complete with the Himalayan vista.

During the monsoon (June-August) although there will be no problem with trekking, the issue could be of less visibility and rain. But for a keen botanist, monsoon is a blessing as the higher valleys, mountains, and meadows blossom with flowers and abundant vegetation. You can trek in winter (December, January, and February) as well especially in the hilly regions but as you reach higher elevations it is much colder with snowfall. If you don’t necessarily enjoy crowds, trekking during the monsoon or winter or choosing a more solitary trekking destination could be your options. Note that due to global warming there has been a change in the regular climate worldwide and Nepal is no exception. Please be open to unpredictable weather conditions as well

High Altitude:

This is a high altitude journey and elevation starts from low 1,950 m to 3,800 m high, where symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) might occur due to dry air and less oxygen, as our adventure starts with drive to Syabrubesi and overnight stops at Dhunche town in nice and cozy local lodge, which provides you with acclimatization as well with rest day at Kyanjin Gompa before heading back from highest elevation of Langtang Himal Trekking. In this trip one needs to be in good physical shape with sound health to avoid other medical complication on the route the journey, just follow our guide he will advise and suggest which keeps and makes you feel secure to enjoy this fabulous adventure with us.

Weather & Climate

The weather depending upon the season of trekking in Langtang Himalayan belts, where's Langtang Trek can be visited all the time of the year, however, monsoon months of July to mid-September will be wet but much greener with heavy moistures.

The best time will be from March to May when wildflowers are in full bloom around Lama Hotel and Langtang Village in 2,000 m to 3,000 m high and then tree lines and vegetation declines for rough arctic terrain, the temperature will be 15 to 20 degree Celsius during the day with sunlight, morning and evening can be much cooler with minimum of -0 to 05 degree Celsius not counting the wind chill factors.

As the trek leads higher above 4,000 m temperature drops in the shade as well in the morning and night time, the day will be clear with strong sunlight and UV (due to drop in oxygen and air pressure on high elevation) , where you need strong sunscreen to avoid sunburn in direct sunlight. Mid-September to December will be the clearest weather but with a short day’s minimum of -05 to -10 degree Celsius in the morning and night time with a maximum of 15-20 degrees during the day in full sunlight, also depends upon the altitude and areas of trekking.

December to March will be the coldest months with chances of snows with a minimum of -10 to -15 degree Celsius with a maximum of 15-18 degrees Celsius without wind chill factor, however, most of the day time will be clear with fine blue sky.
