FAQs

When is the best time for the Everest Base Camp Short Trek?

The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is during the autumn season (mid-September to late November) and spring (February to May), when the weather is stable, and the views are at their finest. However, if you are reasonably fit, you can embark on this adventure any time of the year with the guidance of an experienced professional.

What is the temperature and weather like during the Everest Base Camp Short Trek?

The weather and temperature during the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek vary depending on the season and altitude. However, it is undoubtedly one of Nepal’s coldest trekking routes, especially in the winter months of December, January, and February, when temperatures can drop as low as -30°C.

Seasonal Temperature Variations:

  • Lower Elevations (Lukla, Phakding, Monjo, Jorsalle): These areas experience relatively milder temperatures compared to higher altitudes.
  • Higher Elevations (Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, Everest Base Camp): These locations are significantly colder, with freezing temperatures, especially at night and early morning.

Trekking in Different Seasons:

  • Monsoon Season (June to August): While light rainfall is possible, trekking to Everest Base Camp is still feasible. The trails are quieter, less dusty, and accommodations offer better availability and facilities.
  • Day vs. Night Temperatures: The higher you trek, the colder it gets. Mornings and nights require warm clothing, while daytime temperatures remain mild, allowing for lighter trekking attire.

No matter the season, being prepared with the right gear ensures a comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience to Everest Base Camp.

How Long Does the Everest Base Camp Short Trek Take?

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek typically takes 7 days according to our itinerary and package. However, the duration can vary between 10 to 15 days, depending on your preferences and available vacation time. The total duration will also depend on your fitness level and how much time you have for training before the trek.

For a more relaxed experience, it's recommended to allocate 10–16 days for the trek, which includes extra days for arrival and departure, as well as buffer time. This added flexibility is essential in case of unforeseen delays, such as flight cancellations. Having a few extra days ensures you won't miss your international flight and allows you to enjoy your Nepal holiday stress-free

.

How Difficult is the Everest Base Camp Short Trek Itinerary?

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek is one of Nepal's most popular and challenging trails. While it offers an incredible experience, it requires a good level of physical fitness.

This trek falls under the moderate-to-strenuous category, meaning it’s suitable for trekkers with a reasonable fitness level. It’s important to prepare for long days of walking and varying altitudes. The trek is best undertaken during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) months when the weather is stable and the views are clear.

How Much Does the Everest Base Camp Short Trek Package Cost?

The cost of the Short Everest Base Camp Trek varies depending on the tour operator and the duration of your trek. Several factors influence the price, such as the standard of hotels, transportation, the grade of guides, and the additional services provided during the trek.

The price for the Everest Base Camp Short Trek typically ranges from $1399 USD to $5,000 USD, which includes round-trip flights from Kathmandu (KTM) to Lukla.

  • Group Treks: If you're trekking with a group of at least 4 people, the cost per person will be lower.
  • Single Trekker: If you're trekking solo, expect an additional fee of USD 290 to 1000 for single supplement charges.
  • Budget Options: You may find budget tour operators offering the trek for as low as $1100–$5,000 USD per person, but these options typically provide basic services and accommodations.

Choosing the Right Tour Operator

While budget operators might offer cheaper packages, they often provide basic food, low-quality rooms, and less experienced guides. For a more comfortable and well-rounded experience, we recommend booking your trek with a moderate-priced tour operator.

If you have a limited time frame, consider options like the Everest Base Camp Short Trek with Helicopter Return which can help you maximize your experience and reduce travel time.

Do I Need a Visa and Permit to Hike to Everest Base Camp?

Yes, you will need both a visa and permits to hike to Everest Base Camp.

  1. Visa:
  2. Most international visitors require a tourist visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or apply for one in advance at a Nepalese embassy or consulate. The visa is typically valid for 15, 30, or 90 days, and you’ll need to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket.
  3. Permits:
  4. While trekking to Everest Base Camp, you will need two essential permits:
  5. Sagarmatha National Park Permit: This is required to enter the Sagarmatha National Park area and is issued at the park's entrance in Monjo. The fee is generally around $30 USD.
  6. Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) Card: The TIMS card is mandatory for trekkers, which helps ensure safety and proper management of trekkers in Nepal. It typically costs around $20 USD for a group trek or $30 USD for solo trekkers.

These permits can be arranged by your trekking agency or you can apply for them yourself in Kathmandu. Make sure to carry your passport, passport-sized photos, and the necessary paperwork when applying for these permits.

Can I hire any certified guide for the Everest Base Camp Short (EBC) trek, or is there a dedicated Everest guide?

Yes, you can hire any certified trekking guide for the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. There is no exclusive guide dedicated solely to the Everest region. Many licensed guides in Nepal operate across multiple trekking routes, including Everest. You can find experienced, government-certified guides in Kathmandu or Lukla. When hiring a guide, ensure they hold a valid trekking license for a safe and well-organized journey to EBC

Always ensure your guide and porter are fairly compensated for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

Are There ATMs on the Everest Base Camp Trek Route?

Yes, ATMs are available along the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek route, primarily in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. However, unlike the traditional itinerary, the short trek does not include acclimatization and exploration days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Is Lukla Airport Reliable for Flights?

Lukla Airport (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) sits at an altitude of 2,850m (9,500 ft) and is one of the busiest airports in Nepal, serving as the main gateway for Everest trekkers. Due to the high altitude and thin air, aircraft need to land quickly, making it a challenging but well-managed airstrip.

The weather in Lukla is unpredictable, with frequent cloud cover and turbulence, which can cause delays or cancellations. While these conditions may be inconvenient, flights remain safe, and experienced pilots handle the route daily. Mountain Magic Treks ensures a smooth and well-organized flight experience, helping you reach Lukla safely and comfortably by helicopter. It is 100% safe and doesn't cancel the helicopter flights

Are Helicopter Flights Safe and Available Every Day?

Yes, helicopter flights to Everest Base Camp are generally safe, with experienced pilots and well-maintained aircraft ensuring a secure journey. These flights are a popular option for those wanting to experience the stunning views of the Himalayas without trekking. However, they are weather-dependent, meaning flights may be delayed or canceled if conditions are unfavorable, such as during poor visibility or heavy cloud cover. While helicopters are available year-round, they may not operate every day due to weather and scheduling constraints. It's always best to plan for flexibility when booking a helicopter flight.

Do Guides and Porters Have Insurance?

Rewati Parajuli and the team at Mountain Magic Treks went above and beyond to ensure our group had an amazing time. Everything was professional, communication was timely which ensured our group could focus on having an adventurous vacation. From the guides, porters and staff we never faced any problem during our time trekking.

The booking process was easy and Rewati was always available to answer any questions or provide any assistance needed. I would like to give a special mention to our guide and assistant guide who were excellent. I have trekked the Everest region and toured with other companies before but would not hesitate to book with Mountain Magic Treks after this trip.

In summary, the entire process and experience from booking to arrival and then our visit was flawless which is a huge credit to Revathi and team. Thanks again, we'll be back soon :)

Rewati and the team at Mountain Magic Treks did an amazing job with our Everest Base Camp Short in Nepal. You should choose EBC Trek and Helicopter return back to Kathmandu for your lifetime experiance. Rewati was always very responsive and easy to work with, and everything was handled professionally for us once we arrived in Kathmandu.

We were very impressed with our guide Khem and our porters, Bibek and Khem. Kamal managed the trek expertly, and was always concerned about our health and well-being. Also, the entire team was very friendly, and fun to be around. Actually this trip itinerary is comfortable and risk free of altitude sickness. Mr Rewati was helpfull he provided another low budget trip package and itinerary (Helicopter flight from gorakshep to Lukla only and commercial flight back to Kathmandu) but because of our limited time, we did directly helicopter flight to Kathmandu and it was amazing experiance.

Highly recommended Rewati and Mountain Magic Treks Team!!

My husband and I chose Mountain Magic Treks as our trekking company for a Everest Base Camp Short Trek with helicopter Return in the first week of November 2022. Everything was perfect, even before arrival, the owner Revathi always surprised me with her quick answers to any of our queries.
And was very helpful from the start. After we arrived in Kathmandu we were picked up by our guide Khem, who is an absolute star! He made us feel like family right from the start, very caring and always looking out for our well being.

We are already planning to come back for the Gokyo trek and we definitely want Khem as our guide! With a big smile on his face at every moment, he was just the best guide you could have for this amazing experience! Khem is very experienced and I cannot express enough how grateful we are to have chosen him as our guide.  He knew exactly how to get us to our goal!! Also, Kumar, our porter, he was amazing, such a lovely person, and we were always in awe of his speed running up and down the hills. We had an amazing time, if you are thinking of trekking in Nepal, go with Mountain Magic Treks and you will have an experience of a lifetime that you will never forget.

Mountain Magic Treks was amazing. Highly recommend for any trek they offer. Revathi is dedicated to making sure you have a wonderful experience. Our guide, Khem, was very helpful in any situation that came up during the trek and really looked after our group. All the porters were very fun and energetic. Brilliant trek to EBC and return back to Kathmandu by helicopter flight - Highly Recommended
After Covid, we finally got the opportunity to visit Nepal Trekking in November 2022. We have chosen the Everest Base camp Short Trek package which offered a helicopter return back to Kathmandu from Gorakshep after we reach EBC. The hike itself was amazing, an amazing part of the world with compelling views and that "big mountain" feel throughout. And the Nepali people were incredibly warm and always welcoming. The organization of the trek at Mountain Magic Treks was exemplary, everything was exactly as promised and the whole thing worked incredibly smoothly, leaving us to focus on making the most of our time in the Himalayas. Rewati, the owner of the company, was very helpful and responsive before we arrived in Nepal and while we were there. Highly recommended Rewati and Mountain Magic Treks Team

Fascinating trip to Everest Base Camp Short Trek with helicopter return!
My Everest trekking mission accomplished! I am happy with the trekking and helicopter service provided by Mountain Magic Treks. Since our conversation began; They are a friendly, professional, and experienced team, solving problems quickly, finding the best solution services during the tour (domestic flight was changed to a helicopter for Lukla), and providing constant support (quick WhatsApp response from Rewati).

The Mountain Magic Treks team has strong local ties on the ground. We need an extra porter. Rewati quickly called from Kathmandu and arranged one. We can rest and complete the trek with proper local assistance. (Also got extra blankets at the guesthouse) This experience was definitely one of the most enjoyable and very well guided trips.
Highly recommended Rewati and Mountain Magic Treks Team

Excellent choice
Paradise Himalaya was an excellent choice. Kamal and Keshap did a good job. They answered all our questions. As the day of trekking approached, we asked a lot of questions. Rewati also came to meet us at the airport. We were safely shifted to a hotel in Thamel. He explained everything about the trekking and left us with a trek leader, he was friendly, experienced and knowledgeable . The leader then explained our further plans. Next day we left for Lukla. The flight experience was great and gave us the thrill of flying in the clouds over the mountains. Then met the porter in Lukla. Our journey to Phakding had already begun.
We then proceeded to Namche, Dingboche, Tengboche, Gorkshep and finally Everest Base Camp. I don't know if I missed some destination names in between and also mistyped some spellings. Anyway, we had a very enjoyable trekking. We also spent relaxing days visiting Sherpa villages. After reaching Everest base camp then we flued back by helicopter tour from Gorakshep to Kathmandu. It would be a perfect choice (Helicopter Return flight)

We made the most of the day and went to the nice restaurants in Thamel. Both Keshap and Kamal accompanied us and guided us through the mall and traditional shops. We got pashmina clothes for our family here in USA. The trekking and helicopter return was the best time of our lives. Thank you Mountain Magic Treks for planning and guiding Everest Base Camp Short Trek and helicopter return flight from Gorakshep to Kathmandu. If you are also planning an Everest Trek choose the Everest Base Camp Short Trek package which includes Helicopter return from Gorakshep to Kathmandu and Trek with Mountain Magic Treks Team will be a perfect choice.

Unforgettable experience Everest Base Camp Short Trek with Mountain Magic Treks Team!

The Everest Base Camp Short Trek with a helicopter return from the base camp to Lukla just completed with Mountain Magic Treks was an incredible experience. The company was professional and organized from the start, and the guides and staff were friendly, knowledgeable and made the trek a truly memorable one.

The helicopter ride from Gorakshep to Lukla was smooth and the views of the surrounding mountains were breathtaking. From Lukla, the trek to Gorakshep was relatively hard, and the guides were great at explaining the culture and way of life of the Sherpa people. The views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular, and we were able to see peaks such as Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Mount Everest and Lhotse along the way.

The highlight of the trek was visiting the base camp of Mount Everest and Kala Patthar viewpoint. The hike to base camp was strenuous but the views of the surrounding peaks and the base camp itself were well worth the effort. The Kala Patthar viewpoint offered a similar experience but with less effort. The guides were very helpful in explaining the history and significance of the base camp and providing information on the surrounding peaks.

The accommodation and food throughout the trek were excellent. The lodges were clean and comfortable, and the food was delicious, particularly the traditional Sherpa dishes. The staff at the lodges were also very friendly and accommodating.

The helicopter return from the base camp to Lukla was a great way to end the trek. It was a unique and exciting experience, and the views of the mountains were even more breathtaking from the helicopter.

Overall, the Everest Base Camp Short Trek 11 days itinerary is perfect from arrival to departure from Kathmandu. Join with Mountain Magic Treks for low budget trekking and meet the professional team to get unforgettable experience. The company was professional and organized, the guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular. I would highly recommend this trek and this company to anyone looking to experience the beauty of the EverestTrekking

Unforgettable Everest Base Camp Short Trek Experience with Mountain Magic Treks

If you're thinking about doing the Everest Base Camp Short Trek, look no further than Mountain Magic Treks! My friend and I hadn't hiked much before, but we decided to take the leap and do the Everest Base Camp Short Trek—and we made it all the way to the top! The whole experience was made even better by the amazing team that treated us like family every step of the way.

A highlight was the helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Gorakshep to Kathmandu after reaching EBC. It was nothing short of incredible! A huge thank you to the entire team, especially our guide Shiva, who was not only knowledgeable but also funny, kind, and so incredibly patient. Let's face it, trekking to Everest Base Camp is no easy feat, but Shiva made the whole journey more enjoyable with his support and positive energy.

We were also lucky to have an incredible porter who made sure all our gear was transported quickly and efficiently. Both our items arrived faster than we did! He truly deserves so much credit for making our trek smoother.

Since it was our first time in Nepal, we didn’t have a solid plan after EBC, but Rewati had us covered! He organized additional tours, including a trip to Chitwan, that exceeded all our expectations. We got to see so much more than we had originally thought. Without their help, we would have been lost!

I wholeheartedly recommend booking your Everest Base Camp Short Trek through Mountain Magic Treks. You’ll have an unforgettable journey, and you won’t regret it! We'll definitely be using them for our next adventure in Nepal. Thanks again to Shiva, Rewati, and Kesab for an incredible experience. We miss you already!
