Taking a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Gorakshep in the Everest region of Nepal offers several compelling advantages. First and foremost, it's a highly time-efficient choice. Helicopters are significantly faster than trekking, saving precious days for travelers with limited time to explore the region. Additionally, the notorious weather-related delays at Lukla's airstrip can disrupt fixed-wing flights, while helicopters are more versatile, often providing a more reliable means of transportation.
Furthermore, the scenic experience is unparalleled. Helicopter passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape, including panoramic vistas of iconic peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. This aerial perspective adds a unique dimension to the journey.
Comfort and convenience are additional benefits. Helicopters offer a smoother and more comfortable ride compared to crowded flights or grueling treks. Passengers enjoy more personal space and less physical exertion.
Moreover, in case of emergencies, a helicopter can be a literal lifesaver, allowing rapid evacuation to lower altitudes or Kathmandu's medical facilities. The option for customization is also appealing; you can tailor the departure time and locations to suit your preferences.
While helicopter flights are pricier than other modes of transport, the advantages, including avoiding crowds and reducing physical exertion, make them a valuable choice for those who can afford the experience. We select lodges/restaurants that provide fresh, clean, tasty, and nutritious food. The menu is a mix of local (traditional), Asian, and Western dishes, but as we climb higher, the menu gets shorter. We recommend liquids like green tea, lemon tea, hot lemon, ginger tea, fresh vegetables, and high-altitude garlic soup (of course).
Although many non-vegetarian items will be available, we recommend avoiding them for quality concerns. We suggest you avoid dairy, cheese items, alcoholic beverages, caffeinated items, or hot chocolate. All personal bills (alcoholic drinks, hot (tea, coffee) drinks, and cold drinks) at tea houses/lodges or cafes except standard meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner with seasonal fruits) are excluded from the package.
Climate is a decisive factor that greatly influences the success of a trek. However, it is difficult to accurately predict the weather in the Everest region. Although professionals, locals, and thrill-seekers trek to the base camp throughout the year, the best time to trek to EBC is either spring or autumn for warmth and a high chance of clear skies.
Trekking is a bit challenging but possible in winter and monsoon. Mountain Magic Treks organizes treks during these seasons as well.
Himalayan weather is unpredictable and temperatures can change quickly.
It is the coldest season with heavy snowfall and low temperatures. Daytime is usually warm, but nights are cool. Although Mountain Magic conducts the trek during these times, we do not recommend you to trek during these two months, especially if you are allergic to cold. However, if you decide to trek during these months, our team will ensure that you are safe, secure, and comfortable.
Temperature: 15°C to -15°C.
March to April is also a great season for trekking to base camp. This season offers stunning views of the Himalayas and fascinating glaciers. From March, the weather starts to warm, and by mid-March, the sky clears, and the snowy mountains will look their best.
Temperature: 18 °C to -12 °C.
May to June is also the best time for trekking as it is the pre-monsoon period. Generally, it starts raining in Nepal from the month of June and lasts till mid-August. So if you want to avoid the rain and trek when the temperature is hot, this is the perfect time for you. The scenery at this time is breathtaking and beautiful.
Temperature: 25°C to -5°C.
It is raining in Nepal during this period and Lukla flight may be canceled. Trekking becomes challenging but not impossible. If you decide to trek during this period, Mountain Magic will ensure your safety, security, and comfort. One of the advantages of trekking in this season is that the trails are less crowded, and the waterfalls look beautiful.
Temperature: 27°C to 5°C.
September to October is one of the best seasons for the EBC trek. As the monsoons slowly recede, the weather looks absolutely lovely, and hordes of trekkers will be on their way to the base camp. Due to the weather, scenery, and comfort level, we recommend you to trek during this time. An added advantage – it is also the festival season in Nepal, and if you trek during this time, you will get to enjoy the festivities.
Temperature: 20 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius.
The month of November offers a great time for trekking, the skies are clear, and the view of the mountains is breathtaking. The temperature during the day is very constant. As November progresses, winter slowly sets in, snow begins to fall, and trekking becomes difficult. By December, temperatures drop to annual lows.
Temperature: 18°C to -10°C
The highest elevation we reach is Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters. Our trekking itinerary includes two days of relaxation and acclimatization in Namche and Dingboche. Altitude sickness is very common but preventable. However, if you ignore the symptoms, it can be serious.
Mountain Magic Treks guides and trek leaders have completed extensive first aid training and use oximeters to monitor your oxygen levels to detect early altitude sickness. Furthermore, we have designed our itinerary to prevent altitude sickness. However, for severe mountain sickness cases, the only treatment is immediate descent. Your group leader has the right to stop the climb considering the condition of vulnerable persons.
Exercising regularly a few weeks before your trip will increase your stamina. Anyone with normal fitness can complete the trek. However, the fitter you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be. We recommend that you conduct stamina-building exercises a few weeks before your trip.
Previous hiking experience would be an added advantage, but no technical experience or skill is required. With a light day pack, participants who can walk for 5 to 6 hours a day, at a reasonable pace, can complete this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform us or consult their physician before booking the trek.
We organize group and private treks. Group discounts are available based on the size of your team. The bigger your team, the more discount Mountain Magic Treks gathers a group, you will not qualify for the discount.
We can handle all group sizes. Your group will include a group leader, a porter for every two treks, and an assistant guide for groups of 6 or more.
Each day brings a unique experience of trekking, climbing, enjoying the view, taking photos, and exploring the local villages. Experienced expert Sherpas will share information and historical facts about the places as you trek. The day starts with breakfast, and then we head out from 7 am to 8 am depending on the duration and nature of that day's hike. After three hours of trekking, we have lunch and some rest, then proceed to our destination for the day.
Once we reach our overnight lodge/tea house, we have extra dietary food. You will have some free time to explore nearby places every day and better to walk around than stay in the room.
You will have dinner from 6 pm to 7 pm, and after dinner, we will have time for socializing. Your trek leader will brief you about the next day's plans. After the briefing and before going to bed, you will have time to enjoy reading, Monopoly, playing cards, or watching mountaineering documentaries.
You can enjoy Wi-Fi at extra cost in lodges/restaurants/hotels, but at higher altitudes, communication will be via phone. Our Mountain Magic Treks office in Kathmandu will be in touch with each team through the trek leaders at least once a day. Mobile signal is weak at high altitudes. If you want, you can easily buy a local SIM card in Kathmandu. You can get Wi-Fi access in lodges/hotels at an additional cost.
Food in Kathmandu is not included in our package.
You need to bring some spending money for food and extra accommodations in Kathmandu, visa processing, purchase of travel insurance policy, drinks, snacks, hot and cold drinks, tips for trekking team members, souvenirs, etc. We recommend you bring cash. dollars or other major currencies), which you can convert into rupees.
Only Nepali currency can be used in the Nepali market. Electricity and battery recharge, water on EBC trek
On our trekking routes in lodges/hotels, electricity for camera and mobile battery recharge is available at an extra charge. You can buy packed mineral water from the lodges or fill your water bottle with boiled water there. We can provide you with water purification tablets to make your water potable.
You should not drink water from rivers, streams, or wells along the way as it may not be as drinkable as it seems.
Travel insurance is especially mandatory for this trek. All trekkers must provide a copy of their comprehensive travel insurance policy certificate to Mountain Magic Treks. This policy should cover medical and emergency repatriation at high altitudes (up to 6000 meters) along with helicopter rescue and evacuation expenses. We may recommend insurance companies based on the recommendations of our previous clients, but we do not sell insurance policies.
Trekking members are requested to send their details – including insurance information after they book for trekking. In the event of an emergency, we will use your insurance policy and the information documents you have sent us. This will help us arrange a quick and efficient rescue operation and transfer to a medical facility if necessary. Before purchasing travel insurance, call the company and double-check if they have heli-rescue and evacuation at altitudes up to 6000 meters.
To enter Nepal All foreigners require a visa except Indians. You can obtain an on-arrival visa at the Tribhuvan International Airport, and extend your visa at the Immigration Office. You can find details here - www.immigration.gov.np.
Nepalese Rupee (NPR/Rs) is the local currency.
(1 USD = ~Rs. 125-130 NPR approx)
You can exchange most foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges around the Thamel area. Legal currency exchanges have their running rates displayed visually on their premises. Please note that only 100 and 2000 Indian rupee notes are valid in Nepal. If you carry other Indian notes, they may be confiscated.
We prefer cash exchange to avoid hassles like lengthy processes and high bank commission rates. You can withdraw cash (in rupees only) from ATMs in Kathmandu and Thamel; These ATMs are open 24 hours a day. If you are using a foreign card, the maximum withdrawal amount is Rs 35,000 for a processing fee of Rs 500.
If you use the money exchange facility in banks and financial institutions, there is a service charge of about four percent or more depending on the bank.
During the trek, there are no bank or money exchange services. Therefore, you should exchange your money in Kathmandu.
Most of the banks in Nepal do not accept old, torn, or faded foreign currency notes. Please make sure that you have new and clean foreign currency notes.
The baggage weight limit is 10 kg per trekker. A porter carries luggage for two people, and the maximum weight is 20 kg.
We never overload our porters and expect you to carry a small bag with your valuables and essentials. You are free to store your extra luggage either at your hotel or at the Mountain Magic Treks Store. The Mountain Magic Treks Store feature is completely secure and free.
Mountain Magic Treks pays special attention to customer safety, security, and satisfaction. We carry all necessary gear, tools, and first aid kits, and all our trek leaders/guides have received first aid training. If someone in the team gets sick, your team leader can stop the climb. In case of emergency, we will evacuate by swift helicopter. Since we will be trekking in a group, we will be safe together in the Himalayan desert.
Responsible Eco-tourism
Mountain Magic Treks works towards sustainable tourism, so we try to minimize disturbance to nature. We work with the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) to ensure that our tours are eco-friendly for the benefit of tourists and locals alike.
On a 10-day trek, you will have well-trained and licensed staff who have spent years trekking/climbing. We will arrange porters for you, and they will carry a maximum of 20 kg (10 kg per person). However, if you need additional porters, we can arrange them as well. Our Team members are local people born and raised in the high Himalayas above 3000m/ 9842.52 ft, and their physical endurance is second to none. All our team members - including the porters are insured, and we look after them in every way.
Tipping is at the discretion of the customer and should reflect the quality of service. Nepali culture accepts and respects tips as a way of saying thank you. It is best to provide suggestions in the group and on the last trekking day.
Mountain Magic Treks is a government-authorized, registered, licensed, and bonded trek and tour company with over a decade of experience in Nepal. We are members of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAN), and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
